Del Mar Racetrack

In 1937 Del Mar Racetrack opened with Bing Crosby at the gate to greet the first fan. Fondly referred to as the city where "the turf meets the surf", Del Mar is just a solid chip shot from the Pacific Ocean and only 20 miles north of downtown San Diego and 100 miles south of Los Angeles on I-5. Del Mar is bordered on the south by Torrey Pines State Reserve, on the north by the San Dieguito River, Del Mar Racetrack and San Diego County Fairgrounds and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. East of Del Mar is the I-5 freeway and a new community, Carmel Valley.

Breathtaking canyons interspersed with hillsides of homes, Del Mar has a colorful history filled with excitement and pleasure. Bing Crosby created a song in its honor. Crosby and friends such as Jimmy Durante turned the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club into one of the most beautiful and prestigious organizations in the United States, if not the entire racing world.

Visitors to Del Mar’s track have witnessed many record breaking moments including the famous Seabiscuit-Ligaroti match race in 1938. Del Mar’s Opening Day in 2005 is Wednesday, July 20. Premier racing is hosted everyday except Tuesdays through closing day, Wednesday, September 7.

Plenty of outdoor activities and opportunities to enjoy Del Mar’s outstanding Pacific Ocean views await you at Seagrove Park, James Scripps Bluffs Preserve, Torrey Pines State Reserve and Beach and nearby Torrey Pines Public Golf Course. In the evening stroll through the winding streets dotted with palm trees and towering Torrey Pines to the Plaza on Camino del Mar. Colorful Adirondack chairs face a peaceful ocean view and offer a great place to people watch. Sip a glass and wine or dine at one of the gourmet restaurants.
